In the opening chapters of this work we traced the beginnings of psalmody in New England, regarding that school of music as the seed whence the greater part of the American harvest came. Conditions have changed in recent days, and a worthy school of American composers has arisen, no longer copying the Sternhold and Hopkins, or the Ravenscroft style of composition, but drawing its sustenance from the best German teaching, and from the influence of the entire modern school of European music.
